English as a Second Language Minor (EDUC)
Millersville University offers undergraduate students the opportunity to add English as a Second Language specialization to their degree with the ESL minor. The scope of this ESL minor is to provide interested students with a background in effective teaching strategies, second language acquisition theory, programming and assessment, awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity in the classroom, and policies and practices in teaching English learners.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
• Structured Literacy Knowledge and Practice Standards of English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers.
• Background in effective teaching strategies, acquisition theory, programming and assessment
• Awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity in the classroom
• Practices in teaching English learners
• ESL Program Specialist Certificate
Students will have a practicum/student-teaching experience at the culmination of this program. This minor will allow education majors in the EMEE Department who obtain their Level I certification to concurrently obtain an ESL Program Specialist Certificate.
* Only one course which counts towards the major may be counted towards the minor.
Regulations Governing Minor Course Work
- There shall be a minimum of 18.0 credit hours with a minimum Millersville QPA of 2.0.
- Only one course which counts toward your major may be counted toward your minor.
- Courses that count toward a minor are also eligible to be used to satisfy the current University-wide General Education requirements subject to normal distribution requirements.
- At least two courses should be at the upper-division level (300-400). Exceptions may be requested upon evidence of program depth.
- No course needed for the minor may be taken Pass-Fail.
- One-half or more of the work required for the minor must be completed at Millersville University.
- No student may minor in his or her major.
