The Department of History and Philosophy offers degrees in liberal arts in History, Philosophy, and Military Science as well as a certificate in Ethics. The department’s B.S.Ed. in Social Studies trains students who want to become secondary school educators; upon successful completion of the program, students are certified to teach 7th through 12th grades in Pennsylvania.

Through the Post-Baccalaureate Certification Program, students who already hold a bachelor’s degree can be certified to teach Social Studies in the State of Pennsylvania without have to complete a second degree.

History:

Most students who earn a degree in History do not become professional historians. Instead, they use their historian’s skills to become leaders in today’s society, pursuing entry into a wide variety of careers. Our recent graduates have gone on to work in education, history, law, archaeology, museum studies, archives, libraries, and business, among other fields. Our majors learn

·         How to ask good questions and investigate effectively to find real answers

·         How to analyze and interpret complex subjects

·         How to write and communicate clearly

·         How to interact in a global world that requires creative and critical thinking

Our graduates understand the past but also think critically and imaginatively about the worlds of today and tomorrow.

Philosophy:

Philosophical study presents an occasion to develop critical life skills that prepare students for a wide horizon of career choices and professional opportunities as they learn to address and think through a complex world of both longstanding and emergent issues. Our two programs provide students with experiences, skills, and resources that become pathways to competitive law school admissions, graduate schools, and other areas of study and practice after college.

Philosophy Minor: Students get a grounding in the history of philosophy as well as training in philosophical analysis and writing and develop critical thinking and communicative skills useful in many professional fields. This is excellent preparation for varied career paths, including law, theology, business, cognitive science, literary professions, politics and public advocacy.

Ethics & Society Certificate: This program supports students’ professional development, advancing their moral reasoning skills to better understand principles and applications of ethics as well as critically analyzing the implications of accelerated and dynamic developments through fostering effective communication and collaboration on controversial matters with people of diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
