Social Studies, B.S.Ed.
Students wishing to teach anthropology, psychology or sociology in the secondary schools are required to complete the B.S.Ed. As part of that program, the students should select a number of courses in anthropology, sociology and psychology to prepare for the certification exams in the social sciences. Additional courses beyond the social studies program may be necessary. Upon receiving certification, students can take the test for Social Sciences Certification, which will allow them to teach anthropology, psychology and sociology.
The BSE Social Studies degree is designed for students planning to teach economics, geography, government, history, anthropology, psychology, or sociology in Grades 7-12. The program consists of three blocks of requirements: 45 hours of specific courses that make up the core of the four major disciplines of Social Studies (economics, geography, government, and history); 15 hours of electives; and 33 hours of education courses.
The curriculum for Social Studies, BSE is the same regardless of the department of advisement. However, students will have to select whether to be advised in the History, Government, Economics or Geography department for advisement in the Social Studies major.
